Praslin is the second largest island where you will visit the Vallee-de-Mai, the only place on earth where the giant Coco-de-Mer nut grows in its natural state. Walk along the tended paths of this primeval forest, listening to the trill of the rare Black Parrot, transports one to the beginning of time; giving credence to the legends of this World Heritage Site being the original Garden of Eden. While on La Digue, experience a sense of timelessness where life is lived mainly at the pace of the oxen. Transport is by pickup track and ‘camion’, an open-sided truck with canopy. Visit the giant land tortoises, a refurbished colonial plantation house and beaches studded with iconic giant rock formations.
If interested in cooking and culture, start with a visit to a local market or village for a look at the fresh fruits and vegetables and an impressive array of fish typically used in Creole cuisine. Step inside the home of a Seychellois family for a hands-on introduction to preparing and cooking traditional Creole cuisine. This excursion is not a reconstruction or re-enactment. Prepare to meet a real family, a real dwelling and real ingredients.
