The Last Word, Franschhoek

An intimate, five-star hotel of just 10 guestrooms and suites in the heart Franschhoek, the French corner of the Cape Winelands, The Last Word Franschhoek is best described as elegant and contemporary in style. The 8 Superior Double Room offers 45 square metres of floor space, sufficiently spacious for a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a chaise longue at the foot of the bed/s, a separate seating area, and ample storage space. En-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirror over, and bathtub with shower attachment. The common areas include the pleasant lounge, in which plush sofas and armchairs surround coffee tables and ottomans, all under the twinkling lights of a chandelier. The breakfast room features chic individual tables-and-chairs, laid in readiness for your first meal of the day. All the old machinery which was used in this power station has been lovingly restored and forms an integral part of the hotel’s aesthetics.

This can be seen in the Forest Wing, where the colors and prints of Clinton Friedman, a famous South African Botanical Photographer, are the inspiration for the decor. Bateleur Safari Camp is ideal for couples, singles and small groups who are looking for a Timbavati safari that simultaneously exceeds expectations and offers an up-close experience of the true African bush and wildlife whilst staying at a camp which is totally eco-friendly.

Bateleur Safari CampThe feature of the Bateleur Safari Camp’s central area is the covered, open-sided wooden deck that houses the lounge and dining areas and overlooks the riverbed and its seasonal waterhole. The comfortable lounge area is an ideal place for idle game viewing or relaxing with a good book and a cool drink between guided activities. Books are available from the library and drinks can be purchased from the bar. At meal times the dining area is the perfect location for enjoying sumptuous meals whilst absorbing the sights and sounds of the African bush. The wooden deck extends past the adjacent chemical-free swimming pool which allows guests to cool off in the heat of the day without missing the wildlife and bird life that frequent the waterhole.

The central area is completed by a tastefully finished, low-walled boma area open to the stars with chairs set up around a central fireplace. This is an ideal place to relax around the fire and share stories of the day’s activities under a big African sky. Adjacent is the camp’s braai/barbeque area where food is often prepared by the chef on the open fire.

Accommodating up to 16 people, the camp offers very spacious, comfortable safari units with a unique design. Each unit has: a thatched A-frame roof with supporting gum-pole structure and covered patio; canvas sides with large windows offering fixed mosquito screens and roll-down flaps; double wooden front doors with fixed mosquito screens and roll-down flaps for the top half; a large en-suite bathroom.

Bateleur Safari CampThe safari units vary in size, each sleeping 2-4 persons in comfort with spacious beds, quality linen and towels, mosquito nets, bedside tables, solar powered bedside lamps, wardrobes, adequate storage facilities, and a solar powered fan for the hot weather. Plug points are provided for charging camera batteries. Each spacious en-suite bathroom has flush-toilet, basin and a hot-water shower. Some units have an interior bath tub and a private outdoor shower.

Regular 4-legged visitors that can be seen walking within the camp perimeter during the day include Nyalas, warthogs and bushbuck. Elephants, buffalo and rhino can often be seen walking through the river bed in front of the camp. And at night, anything shorter than an adult elephant can, and often does, walk through the camp under the cover of darkness.

Baobab Ridge Lodge

Baobab Ridge Lodge lies within the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve offering guests an up-market, clean, comfortable and affordable wilderness experience. This small and intimate private lodge with only 7 private suites (sleeps maximum 16 guests), gives guests a feeling of serenity, far away from the masses. As a part of the greater Kruger National Park, the Klaserie has no fences into the Kruger and can offer guests the Kruger experience in open game viewers. The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, as well as its neighbor, the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, are known for good game viewing. Family owned and run, the Baobab Ridge Lodge gives guests a place they can call a home away from home in a private and very comfortable bush lodge setting. Situated within easy reach of the suites, the main lodge is equipped with a bar and lounge area, small TV room with satellite television and DVD, free WiFi, outdoor terraces, guest bathrooms, a large dining room and an office. Outdoors, there is a comfortable open-air boma area with a fireplace. The swimming pool overlooks the surrounding bush and a small waterhole. The lodge is accessible to wheelchairs and is fully fenced from larger wildlife to ensure your safely. Guests have full use of the indoor and outdoor living areas and all facilities within the lodge.

Relais & Chateaux’s Jabulani is a family-owned and managed private luxury safari lodge located within the private Kapama Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, South Africa (in close proximity to the Kruger National Park, and scenic Mpumalanga region).
