Kati Kati Tented Camp, Serengeti

A mobile tented camp located in Central Serengeti, Kati Kati is strategically located to cover the vast Serengeti Plains. The solar powered camp offers comfortable accommodation and a unique opportunity to enjoy a real safari camp experience. The camp is only a two hour scenic drive from Olduvai Gorge and Grumeti River.

The tents at Kati Kati, while reasonably simple, are spacious and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy the experience of sleeping under canvas in the heart of the Serengeti. The tents and furnishings are khaki colored in order to blend in with the natural surroundings, with plastic windows allowing plenty of natural light while keeping mosquitos at bay. Each tent comes complete with either one king sized bed or two twin beds, each tent also has its own en suite bathroom with flush toilet, hand basin and safari shower to the back, as well as a small shaded veranda at the front. Lighting is solar powered.

Food is served under canvas in the central mess tent and is eaten communally. Despite being located in the middle of the Serengeti, Kati Kati’s chefs provide wholesome and hearty meals with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, much of which has been sourced from the gardens of the camp’s sister properties in the nearby Ngorongoro highlands. Before dinner, guests can gather around the campfire for appetizers and snacks.

Lake Burunge Tented Lodge, Tarangire

Situated on the shores of Lake Burunge and located in the migratory corridor of Manyara and Tarangire, Lake Burunge Tented Camp is only 20-minute drive away from Tarangire National Park.

The camp has twenty thatched guest rooms and pleasant elevated public areas. Lake Burunge Tented Lodge consists of 20 Luxury Tents and 10 Lodge Rooms nestled in a shady bush land grove, with spectacular views onto Lake Burunge. All rooms at Lake Burunge offer large beds with mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms with built in showers, private verandas and views of Tarangire National Park and Lake Burunge. Since tap-water is piped from the lake, you are advised that it is neither for drinking nor tooth-brushing; bottled water is supplied for this purpose.

The lodge offers both refreshing outdoor and cosy indoor dining. Food is simple and abundant, a combination of European and local dishes. The latter are tasty, spicy and naturally adapted to the climate.  All ingredients are produced in local communities and are fresh, usually organically grown. Buffet meals are served in the dining room, or you may dine on your own verandah or take picnics by arrangement. The main building offers a central lounge and bar/dining area built on a raised wooden deck.

Lake Burunge Tented Lodge offers unrivalled opportunities to experience close quarters with native wildlife, from dik-diks bounding on the hillside and geckos frolicking in your thatch, to thousands of birds flitting through the trees, fighting for insects around the camp and serenading you throughout the life-throbbing African night.

Hoanib Valley Camp, Kaokaland

Hoanib Valley Camp is located in the Sesfontein Community Conservancy, set back in a hidden valley and surrounded by a range of jagged mountains, just outside the private Palmwag Concession.

Hoanib Valley’s six guest tents blend almost perfectly into the rugged environment. The colours, textures and patterns are inspired by the experience of the Hoanib; the rich ochre of the dunes, the geometric patterns of the Himba people and, of course, the giraffe that inspired the project. True to the ethos of Natural Selection, they’ve sourced materials locally, and you’ll find furniture shaped by the local Rundu carpenters and Himba carvers, and baskets weaved by the people of the Omba Project in Windhoek.

The whole camp is a clean and green sort of place, leaving virtually no footprint on this fragile eco-system. It’s entirely solar powered to ensure carbon emissions are kept to a minimum, and the tents sit on decks made of a wood, bamboo and 70% recycled-material composite. The area is a melee of towering mountains, sand dunes, and huge expanses of desert, scattered with unique wildlife and nomadic Himba settlements. It’s also one of Namibia’s most remote and wild environments, and one that not many will get the chance to discover in a lifetime.

Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast

Ten guest rooms are available here – eight standards and two for families. Inspired by the shipwrecks lining Skeleton Coast, this is absolutely stunning accommodation! Each unit is constructed from wood and glass, featuring details such as beams and portholes. Appropriately, there’s a deck, set with chairs and a small table. A timber-framed glass door leads into the room, which in the case of a standard includes a double bed or twin beds with lighting over, bedside tables, a seating area, and a tea-and-coffee station. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin, and shower. Each family room benefits from all these amenities, in addition to sleeping space for a maximum of two children. And all rooms boast a wood-burning stove, perfect for keeping cozy!

The design of the communal structure at Shipwreck Lodge also owes much to the property’s surroundings. Another timber-and-glass build, it too has a deck where guests can relax and admire the spectacular scenery! Inside, there’s a lavish lounge, featuring armchairs, sofas, and even a swing seat, all with sumptuous throws. A wood-burning stove adds to the warmth of this space, while a sand-colored floor and a classic explorer’s chest continue the national park theme. In the lodge’s dining area, chic wooden separate tables and chairs beneath elegant lighting provide the setting for delicious meals. The adjacent bar is well stocked, and the chunkiness of its fittings lends an attractive ship’s cabin feel! Outside, there’s a swimming pool.

Activities on offer during your two days here include game drives, sundowner drives, 4×4 excursions, and shipwreck visits – a great range of things to do.  Game drives take place within the national park, and among the rolling dunes you can look out for species such as desert-adapted lion, black rhino, elephant, brown hyena, baboon, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, and black-faced impala. Towards the ocean, there are large colonies of beautiful Cape fur seals! Keen birders enjoy spotting skuas and jaegers here, with Rüppell’s bustard and Benguela long-billed larks sometimes appearing farther inland.

Each bedroom also has an ensuite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers and a shaded, outdoor veranda. High thatched roofs will keep you cool during the hot desert days (and nights!) and you’ll be pleased to hear that the bedrooms are air conditioned too.

The view from the lodge is spectacular and the glass windows and doors at the main area look out onto the undulating sand that only ends when it meets the mountains, far in the distance. Inside, there’s a well-stocked bar, library area and several seating and dining areas. When the sun rises in the morning, head to the camp fire for a morning cuppa, while in the heat of the day, the swimming pool is the only place to be.
